The main physical benefits of clary sage essential oil include:
- Helping to soothe and alleviate feelings of pain and discomfort in women during the monthly menstrual cycle;
- Balancing the hormonal system;
- Lightening the mood and reducing physical tension and pain caused by stress, and
- Calming and soothing irritated or painful skin.
Primary Emotional Benefits
Clary sage essential oil is also much-loved for its range of non-physical benefits. For centuries, clary sage essential oil has been used in meditation, thanks to its clarity-providing abilities. When used, this oil can heighten your ability to make sense of muddled emotions and look ahead with clarity and vision at the possibilities.
Due to its uses in dispelling confusion and racing thoughts, it is often used by applying on the brow, especially during sessions of meditation to aid with mindfulness and mental clarity. Clary sage oil is also a useful aid for helping with periods of contemplation and creative thinking. Use of clary sage oil can help us to see possibilities that we’re struggling to find when lost in our own thoughts, as well as bringing light to dark places which are a struggle to get through. Because of this, clary sage oil is often used by people suffering from mental health struggles such as depression, anxiety or even post-traumatic stress disorder.
Clary sage oil can be used aromatically with a number of different benefits. Inhaling diffused clary sage oil can be beneficial for restfulness and relaxation, balancing the mood, and helping to arrange muddled emotions.
In the same way that harmful compounds such as gases and other chemicals can be inhaled and absorbed into the blood stream, so can the positive, calming and clarifying properties of clary sage oil. Essential oils such as clary sage oil are processed by the olfactory bulb and the limbic system, which is how this oil helps us to feel calmer, more relaxed, and able to think more clearly.
There are a range of different ways in which you can use clary sage oil aromatically to balance your mood, help clear your mind, or even just make your home smell nice and fresh. Aromatic uses include:
- Diffusing: Using a good diffuser will release the oil molecules into the air using cold or room temperature, or ultrasonic vibrations. This will help the oil molecules to remain air-bound for several hours and will not affect the structure of the oil through heat or diminish its quality.
- Direct Inhalation: Inhale by holding the bottle of clary sage essential oil a few inches from the nose and breathing in deeply. Or, add a couple of drops to the hands and cup them over the mouth and nose.
- Indirect Inhalation: Add a few drops of clary sage essential oil to your pillowcase at night for a deeper, more relaxed sleep.
- Steam Tent: Add a few drops of the oil to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water, place a towel over your head and lean over the water to inhale the steam.
- Fans and Vents: Add a few drops of clary sage essential oil to a clean cloth and place it in front of a vent or fan.
- Perfume: Add a few drops of the oil to the wrists and behind the ears for indirect inhalation throughout the day. Perfect for particularly stressful periods.
Clary sage essential oil can be used topically by applying to the skin to soothe irritation, boost mindfulness and reduce the symptoms of menstrual discomfort in women. Clary sage oil is not a potent oil, therefore it can be applied to the skin without dilution, even if the user has sensitive skin or is a child.
Traditionally, clary sage essential oil is applied topically to the brow during periods of meditation or creative thinking to help clear the mind and balance the emotions. Even if you do not practice meditation, you can benefit from the topical use of this oil as a mood-balancing and relaxation aid.
Women who suffer with menstrual problems such as painful bloating and stomach cramps can apply 2-3 drops of clary sage essential oil topically to the abdomen in order to relieve symptoms. Topical application of this oil to the feet or pulse points on the body can also help to balance hormones.
Clary sage essential oil can also be topically applied to the hair and scalp to promote healthy hair growth. The oil can be applied to the scalp and hair directly, or added to shampoo and conditioner when washing.
This essential oil is regularly used as a massage oil, especially combined with fractionated coconut oil. Apply topically either all over or on affected areas to soothe and rejuvenate skin that is dry, itchy or painful.
Another common way of applying clary sage essential oil topically is to add it to bathwater. Adding a few drops of this oil to your bath will promote relaxation, help to clear your mind, and relieve any menstrual symptoms.
Clary sage essential oil is safe to use internally, although this use is not commonly seen. If you wish to try using clary sage essential oil internally, there are a range of different methods of doing so. These include:
- Adding to an empty veggie capsule to help relieve symptoms of menstrual pain or hormonal imbalance
- Add to hot water or herbal tea for a relaxing and mind-balancing drink
- Include a small drop or two of the oil in your cooking
Using Around the Home
You can also use clary sage essential oil as a product around the home, whether it be for air freshening or cleaning. Not only will this give your home a lovely fresh, herby and floral smell, it’ll also provide an environment where you have constant access to the healing and mind-clearing properties of the oil.
One of the best and most popular ways to use clary sage oil around the home is to make a natural room air-freshening product. This can be done simply by mixing a few drops of clary sage essential oil with distilled water, and adding to a spray bottle. Combine with other essential oils such as lemon oil, sandalwood oil or wild orange essential oil to create refreshing, gorgeous scents that not only benefit your home but also your health.
Placing reed diffusers in a bottle of neat clary sage oil, or clary sage essential oil mixed with a blend of other favorite oils is also a great way to create a new, all-natural fresh home scent. Display as you would any other reed diffusing product, turning and changing the reed diffuser sticks regularly to get the most benefit.
You may also want to consider adding a few drops of clary sage essential oil to your regular home cleaning products for a fresher and more natural odor.
Clary sage essential oil is amongst the least potent and safest of oils for aromatic, topical and internal use. Clary sage essential oil does not need to be diluted before use in most cases. However, before applying clary sage essential oil directly to your skin for the first time, you should always conduct a skin patch test. This will help you to determine how your skin reacts to the oil, and whether or not you should dilute it before further use. To conduct a patch test, apply a small amount of oil to the inner arm and leave twenty-four hours before any further application.
Pregnant women should also take great care when using clary sage essential oil. The oil is known to promote uterine contractions, therefore any aromatic, topical or internal use of this oil should always be discussed with a doctor, midwife or OBGYN beforehand if you are pregnant.
Clary sage essential oil is also safe for children, although greater care should be taken if giving to a child to ingest. If adding clary sage essential oil to food or drink for children, do not exceed more than 1-2 small drops.
